Favreau Back For ‘Iron Man 2’

10 07 2008

After directing movies like Zathura and Elf, Jon Favreau has finally proven that he’s got the chops to handle big budget action movies. When I first heard he was bringing Iron Man to the big screen, I was skeptical. I had heard that he was a huge fan of the Iron Man comics, which is always a plus, but doesn’t always mean that the final product will be worthwhile. Just look at Ghostrider. Then the trailers started coming out and I had a better feeling about it. Then I saw it and was blown away.

It turns out that Favreau wanted to come back to direct an Iron Man sequel, but was asking for more money from Marvel. Marvel was initially only going to pay him a little more than they did for the first Iron Man. Fortunately for us, Marvel reconsidered and has secured Favreau for the sequel.

The movie is set for a 2010 release, but now there’s a dispute over whether or not that’s enough time.

Favreau told SlashFilm:

‘This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date. It is difficult because there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product, but I also think we owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.’

It makes me happy to know that he doesn’t want to rush a sequel. I’d hate to see Iron Man 2 turn into Spider-Man 3.
